‘All That Breathes,’ ‘Fire of Lice’ Erupt as IDA Documentary Awards Nominations Announced

This article features Meltdown: Three Mile Island, and was originally published here.

Fire of Love and All That Breathes further established themselves as solid Oscar contenders, leading all comers as the IDA Documentary Awards nominations were announced today.

Fire of Love, about scientists Katia and Maurice Krafft, a French couple who risked their lives documenting volcanic eruptions, earned five IDA nominations, including Best Feature Documentary and Best Director for Sara Dosa. It was also recognized in the cinematography, editing, and writing categories.

All That Breathes, director Shaunak Sen’s poetic study of two brothers in Delhi, India who rescue and rehabilitate injured birds of prey, was announced as the winner of the Pare Lorentz Award, an honor named for the pioneering filmmaker who made highly regarded work during the Great Depression. All That Breathes earned four other nominations, including Best Feature Documentary, Best Director, cinematography, and editing [see the full list of IDA Awards nominations below].

The biggest snub of the day was for The Territory, Alex Pritz’s film that has earned numerous pre-Oscar awards and nominations. It failed to earn any IDA nominations, despite being previously shortlisted for Best Feature Documentary. A House Made of Splinters, meanwhile, surged into the awards conversation by earning three IDA Awards nods: Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography and Best Director for Simon Lereng Wilmont. The lyrical film, set in Eastern Ukraine before Russia’s full-scale invasion but during its simmering preamble, takes place inside a shelter for abused or neglected children. The parents of these children struggle with alcoholism, drug addiction and unemployment, pressure points sharpened by the omnipresent rumblings of war.

Laura Poitras’s All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, which won the Golden Lion at Venice in September, picked up two nominations, for Best Feature Doc and Best Director. The Pawnshop surprised with two nominations – Best Feature Doc and Best Director for Polish filmmaker Łukasz Kowalski. Riotsville, U.S.A., directed by Sierra Pettingill, won the ABC News VideoSource Award, an honor recognizing excellence in archival documentaries. The film produced by Sara Archambault and Jamila Wignot and written by Tobi Haslett examines the implications of fake towns that were built on two army bases in the late 1960s, permitting military and police to train in riot suppression.

The IDA Documentary Awards will be presented December 10 at a ceremony on the Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood.

“This year the IDA Documentary Awards shortlists and nominees are selected by independent committees of 310 documentary makers, curators, critics, and industry experts from 52 countries,” the nonprofit organization noted. “IDA received 806 total submissions in all categories, 40 percent of which are internationally produced or co-produced projects from 86 countries.”

Grace Lee and Chris Pérez, co-presidents of the IDA board of directors, said, “We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of such a stellar group of films and programs from around the world. We look forward to celebrating these outstanding works, which provide inspiration not just for the documentary field but also real-world change on a global scale. Kudos to IDA staff and the screening committee members from around the world who helped bring together this extraordinary group of nominees.”

Below is the full list of nominees announced in 18 categories for the 38th IDA Documentary Awards, with winners noted.
