Dear President Biden, Senate Majority Leader Schumer, Pelosi, and House Minority Leader McCarthy:
After almost two years of painstaking work and nine public hearings, the bipartisan House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol recently released its final report. This report contains findings, conclusions, and recommendations informed by over 140,000 documents and over 1000 interviews and depositions. The report represents the considered judgment not only of the bipartisan Select Committee members, but also of the nonpartisan staff—including career investigators and national security experts—whose work supported the Select Committee.
The Select Committee’s work revealed serious evidence of criminal behavior, and investigations are rightly proceeding on the federal, state, and local level. But what we have learned about the events of January 6, 2021, also requires us collectively to do everything possible to address the ongoing threat to our democracy. We must work to ensure that any future attempt to thwart the will of the voters and to prevent the peaceful transfer of power will be unsuccessful. And this work to safeguard American democracy must be informed by the Select Committee’s findings.
We, the undersigned organizations, request that Congress and the Executive Branch consider the Select Committee’s report carefully and take up its recommendations without delay.
Sincerely,
