STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY

May 8, 2025

The undersigned nonprofit and nonpartisan charitable organizations choose to stand up today in solidarity against the government's attack on Harvard University and improper efforts to remove its tax-exempt status. We come together to do so to protect each of our ability to serve our communities to the best of our abilities and defend the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Americans guaranteed by the Constitution and our nation's laws.

If the federal government can target one nonprofit educational institution and try to determine what it teaches and who it accepts, the work of all nonprofits is not safe from government interference. Today it is an educational institution – Harvard University – tomorrow it will be a church serving new Americans, or a local service providing organization helping their community access good health care, affordable housing, or greater opportunity in a country that promises opportunity to all.

When the federal government tries to dictate what a private university teaches or who they admit, that is an overreaching government interfering with the liberty of individuals and organizations in the private sphere.

No president, whether this one or a future one, should have the power to punish private nonprofit organizations because he disagrees with them. If just one president weaponizes the government and abuses this power, no American's political views will be protected from government retribution from that moment forward. Just as Americans must be free to attend places of worship and to vote, they must also be free to express their views.

America's universities serve the public through much more than just education; their research and knowledge production fuel breakthroughs that benefit us all and grow our economy. Charitable organizations across the country provide essential and invaluable services to Americans of all walks of life. They ensure us a place to worship and follow our faith and make our communities healthier, they shelter and feed us, provide Americans with assistance after natural disasters, support children with disabilities, educate the next generation, and so much more. Some nonprofit organizations also perform a vital service by holding the government – regardless of which party controls it – accountable to the law and the Constitution. If the federal government can attack organizations based on their speech, it fundamentally targets all charitable groups. We as a collective group stand with Harvard as it fights to protect itself from the Trump administration's attacks.

The organizations signed on in support of this letter disagree on many things – and in this country, that is the point. But we stand firmly united in our support of private nonprofit organizations to ensure they can continue to serve their communities without fear of being targeted by their government – regardless of who is currently sitting in the White House. Our convictions, and even our disagreements, are what make this country great and will ensure a prosperous and bright future for our nation.
