Senior International Fellow

David Banisar is a human and information rights lawyer based in London, UK. For over 30 years, he has worked on issues including freedom of information, freedom of expression,  whistleblowing, communications security, privacy and data protection, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

David was previously Senior Legal Counsel of ARTICLE 19 for 13 years, Deputy Director of Privacy International and Co-founder and Policy Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, DC. He has been a research fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a visiting fellow at Stanford’s Center for Internet and Society, and the University of Leeds School of Law.  He has also served as an advisor and consultant to numerous organisations, including the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, Council of Europe, Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, UN Development Programme, and the Open Society Institute.

He has a Juris Doctor in law and public policy from The Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
