Media Advisory: Government Accountability Project to Speak at AAAS Annual Meeting

Panel Appearance Coincides with Whistleblowing Guide Publication

WASHINGTON – Government Accountability Project’s Director of Education, Dana Gold, will be speaking on the panel, Legal Protection for Scientists: Overcoming Real and Perceived Barriers, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2019 Annual Meeting. During the panel, Gold will share her expertise as legal counsel to whistleblowers during the segment, Scientists as Whistleblowers: Legal Rights, Risks and Options.

Gold’s appearance at the annual meeting coincides with Government Accountability Project’s publication of “Standing Up for Science: A Guide to Whistleblowing for Federal Employees and Contractors.” Created in response to the Trump administration’s relentless assault on science and employees who exercise professional integrity, the guide offers practical advice for employees considering blowing the whistle and guidance regarding their legal rights to report legal violations, abuse of authority, gross waste of funds, gross mismanagement, dangers to public health and safety, and scientific censorship. Copies of the guides will be available before and after Gold’s presentation for all participants.

“As we’ve seen repeatedly under the Trump administration, science and facts are under attack. Whistleblowers from within the science community are more vital, yet also more vulnerable, than ever. Our new guide explains the challenges of blowing the whistle and guides potential whistleblowers through the process of raising concerns about serious abuses they witness in the workplace. Whistleblowers remain our greatest strength in fighting for transparency and accountability. This guide helps empower the public servants and contractors who witness corruption, abuse, or threats against scientific integrity to speak out safely and effectively.”
