According to a website that closely monitors the case of Julian Assange, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) apparently has definitive evidence that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been arbitrarily detained in the UK. The ruling of the WGAD in the case of Assange v. UK & Sweden is expected tomorrow, Friday.
In the meantime, the site has released an online briefing, which shows that:
1. Assange has not been charged and he is not wanted for trial, despite the fact that he is threatened with extradition to Sweden and has been confined to the Embassy of Ecuador in London for more than two years.
2. Assange has been cleared of the suspicion of ’rape’ by Stockholm’s Chief Prosecutor Eva Finne. The woman who made the original claim that Assange had abused her admits that the police made it up in order to ‘get him’.
3. Assange has been denied the right to defend himself.
4. Assange did not flee Sweden in order to escape an interrogation. He waited in Sweden for five weeks after the charge was brought and sought a chance to provide a statement. Ultimately, he left Sweden with permission from the prosecutor in the case.
Among Julian Assange’s attorneys is Baltazar Garzón, the Spanish judge who sought the extradition to Spain of Augusto Pinochet, the former Chilean military dictator, for human rights abuses.
