First Spanish-Language Whistleblower Website Launched in Chile

CHILE — This week, Whistleblower Chile launched their website and online resources to create awareness about whistleblowing in Chile, where whistleblower rights are a novelty among the legal community. This project was created at the University of Chile School of Law and sponsored by Government Accountability Project and Whistleblower International Network.

The website comprises Chilean case law and statutes on whistleblowing, profiles of famous whistleblowers from Chile and abroad, blogs, and a collection of guidelines for improving understanding of whistleblowing in the Chilean legal system, including a translation of whistleblower best practices in Spanish. This resource is the first Spanish-language website dedicated to spreading academic information about whistleblowing, a long-awaited and sorely needed asset.

Whistleblower Chile is directed by Jorge Martínez Rivera, a Professor of Law at the University of Chile and our Senior International Fellow for Latin America. The staff includes one senior researcher, four assistant researchers, as well as external counselors that include our International Director, Samantha Feinstein, and our Legal Director, Tom Devine.

Jorge Martínez Rivera commented,

“Whistleblower Chile aims to bridge the knowledge gap surrounding whistleblowing in the Spanish-speaking world. Education about whistleblower is especially valuable in Latin America, where pervasive corruption and institutional weaknesses pose formidable challenges for whistleblowers.”
