Former President Indicted for Inciting Attack on U.S. Capitol and Democracy

WASHINGTON—On the evening of August 1, 2023, a federal court indicted former President Donald J. Trump on four charges, including Conspiracy to Defraud the United States and Conspiracy Against Rights, after the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Government Accountability Project and its Democracy Protection Initiative work to protect democracy by providing expert legal and advocacy counsel to whistleblowers and witnesses who disclose serious abuses of public trust, including threats to free and fair elections, offering legal protection and ensuring their disclosures make a difference. We applaud the Department of Justice for using the rule of law to hold accountable those who seek to undermine the foundation of our democracy. We believe no citizen, regardless of their political or socioeconomic status, should be above the law.

Government Accountability Project Senior Counsel and Director of the Democracy Protection Initiative, Dana Gold, commented,

“Government Accountability Project knows that whistleblowers and witnesses from both parties have been crucial to this investigation to expose the truth about the conspiracy, fueled by false information, to undermine the 2020 election results. We also recognize the real risks whistleblowers and witnesses face by speaking truthfully about wrongdoing—especially when those leveraging disinformation to perpetrate wrongdoing use threats and actual violence to serve their nefarious ends. This indictment sends a message that truth, and truth-tellers, are essential to promoting accountability and enforcing the rule of law. Government Accountability Project remains committed to protecting whistleblowers who protect our democracy by challenging and exposing abuses of power.”
